In paper, I try to clear the stage of very large sheets of paper and tidy them into a tube so that I have the space to dance. Time runs out before I am able to. In its first iteration, the frame was that I had big plans for the show - the audience was invtied in to see my mask arguing with a colleague - it’s not going to work out as planned - let’s just put up some screens and I’ll figure it out. I explained the grand plans for the performance while I began to roll up the paper - explaining that all I really wanted to do was dance. And over time, as time ran out, the paper proved impossible to roll up and fit in the tube.
For the second interation of Paper, I tried not to use words. This performance was part of at Da Unten In Himmel, at Poropati, Berlin. I was introduced as a multidisciplinary artists experienced in all fields and none , who wanted to realise their lifelong ambition of simply dancing on stage. On stage was that same paper, and as the time counted down, and the the host repeatedly started the music, I tried (unsuccessfully) to fit the paper in the tube, as before. This piece owes something to earlier performances, as part of ‘March’ and ‘Sanctuary’, whereby the poet has a breakdown on stage. This time there are no words. The piece is a work in progress as the possibilities of performance without words are explored.
